How Mailto Links Work

A mailto: link is a special type of URL that opens the user's default email client with pre-filled fields. When clicked, it launches whatever email application is configured on the user's device (Outlook, Gmail, Apple Mail, etc.).

Supported Parameters

  • to: The recipient email address (can include multiple, comma-separated)
  • cc: Carbon copy recipients
  • bcc: Blind carbon copy recipients
  • subject: The email subject line
  • body: The email body text (use %0A for line breaks)

Best Practices

  • Keep subject lines under 50 characters for best compatibility

  • Special characters are automatically URL-encoded
  • Some email clients limit the total URL length to ~2000 characters
